Electrical discharge machining involves removing material through a series of discharges (sparks) that occur randomly between a conductive workpiece and an electrode used as a tool. To cut internal holes, the material must be pre-drilled, either conventionally before hardening or on a deep hole drill after hardening. Even very fine and complex shapes can be machined from very hard materials, such as hardened steel, titanium alloys, etc. This has radically changed, for example, the technology of tool production, which previously had to be hardened after machining. With electrical discharge machining, shapes are produced after hardening, so there is no risk of deformation.
Electrical discharge machining can achieve high precision and surface quality that rivals grinding.
